  • Every climber should wear one! In the Pennine Alps between Switzerland and Italy is located a hospice, where Bernard of Menthon saved the lives of mountain travelers who had fallen victims of avalanche, exposure, and other mountain hazards. St. Bernard of Menthon was canonized in 1124 and named the Patron Saint of Skiers, Climbers, and Alpinists. Later, he was further honored in the late 1800's when European dog breeders renamed the Alpinie Mastiff, the St. Bernard.
